STEVE ON e-BUSINESS

My first eBusiness experience:

When I first fell in love with information technology in 1981 it was because I was better able to accomplish complex business tasks (proforma financial analyses for corporate acquisitions) using a computer based tool that was powerful, yet easy to use by the typical business worker or professional. In 1981 there was hardly anything as exciting as Lotus 1-2-3, an electronic spreadsheet. We could have called it an "eSpreadsheet" more in keeping with today's "e" language. From 1981 through today there has been a steady acceleration of IT progress including hundreds and thousands of "e" innovations or "e" enabling technologies.

The current eBusiness landscape is made up of many things:

eCommerce - the systems and processes that enable electronic/web based business.

There are many popular websites built for the express purpose of conducting eCommerce sales such as eBay and Amazon.

However, many companies that were not "e" companies to begin with are adding eCommerce capabilities. This can be done in many ways:

  • Add a CRM system for better communications with customers and partner
  • Add an ERP system to streamline internal processes with seamless connections to the business supply chain
  • Develop an Enterprise Web Portal that enables easy and powerful communication and (e)commerce transactions with all business constituents (partners, customers, vendors, employees, etc)
  • Utilize "best of breed" Web 2.0 technologies
  • Add eCollaboration capabilities to easily and efficiently communicate and manage projects with employees, partners and vendors
  • Add social networking capabilities to your realtionships with employees, customers and partners.
and much much more . . . . .
